Katie Anderson

2015

The prominent Canadian 100m Hurdler during the 1990’s was unquestionably Keturah Anderson. Keturah, born in Kingston, Jamaica, moved to Canada in 1975. As a Junior she had success in the short sprints, winning the Pan Am Junior 100m title in 1984. After switching to hurdles in the early 1990’s Keturah’s international ranking began to rise. She competed in the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, the 1993 World Student Games and World Championships, the 1995 Francophonie Games, and the 1996 Atlanta Olympics where she qualified for the second round. She was persistent and in 1997 was rewarded by making both finals of the World Indoor and World Outdoor Championships. At the Indoors in Paris Anderson shattered the Canadian record over 60m in finishing 6th. Several months later, at the World Championships in Athens, she established a new Canadian record of 12.80 in the semis running into a negative 0.4 wind. In the final she finished an outstanding 6th with a time of 12.88, again with a negative wind.

Anderson won her first major senior international medal the following year at the 1998 World Indoor Championships, where she placed 3rd in the 60m Hurdles. She won another bronze later that year, in Malaysia, at the Commonwealth Games . Things went really well for Anderson that summer, as she also reduced her own Canadian record to 12.66 at the Weltklasse meet in Zurich in August.

By the time 1999 rolled around Anderson was considered to be one of the top short hurdlers in the world. She verified this status by winning a bronze medal at the World Indoor Championships in March of that year. Several months later she notched another Canadian record at 12.61s.

Unfortunately, injury problems prevented Keturah from achieving even better results at the 1999 World Outdoor Championships and the 2000 Olympic Games.
