With over 50 years of volunteer experience in Athletics in the Thunder Bay area, George played a major role in the development of Athletics through the Legion Camp Program.

George’s role as an official and meet director have allowed him to successfully organize hundreds of competitions, including a number in Manitoba. He piloted the creation of the Legion Mid-Canada Elementary School Cross-County race which saw 76 your people from Thunder Bay take part in 1972. Since that time, over 14,000 school-aged children have participated in this popular event.

George also played a leading role in organization of the 1981 Canada Summer Games (Chairman of Officials) and the OFSAA Championships in Thunder Bay (Ontario, Canada). Additionally, George officiated many local, regional, provincial, national, and international meets including the 1983 World University Games in Edmonton (Alberta, Canada) and the 1993 World Indoor Championships in Toronto (Ontario, Canada).

George represented the Northwestern Region on the OTFA (now Athletics Ontario) Board of Directors – and was the key contact for the OTFA in the region throughout his time in Thunder Bay. Over the years, he played a key role as a mentor, working to encourage athletes to do their best and opening doors wherever he could to allow the regions’ young athletes to pursue their dreams – a true builder.
