Eva Dawes
2010
Eva Dawes was born in Toronto, Ontario in 1912 and was a track and field athlete who primarily competed in high jump. She qualified to compete at the Olympics in 1928, 1932 and 1936. However, she could not compete during the 1928 games due to her young age, but earned the bronze medal while representing Canada at the 1932 games in Los Angeles, California. Dawes chose to boycott the 1936 games, as they were held in Nazi Germany.
Dawes became the Canadian high jump champion for the first time in 1926 at age 14, and then consecutively from 1932-35. In addition, her high jump career included winning the silver medal at the 1934 Empire Games and setting three Canadian high jump records.
Dawes made the decision in 1935 to join a group of athletes on a goodwill tour of the Soviet Union organized by the Workers’ Sports Association of Canada. Upon her return, Dawes was suspended by the Women’s Amateur Athletic Union of Canada. Instead of applying for reinstatement, Spinks retired.
