Ann Peel
2014
Ann Peel was a dominant force in Canadian and international race walking during the 1980’s. Internationally, Ann won bronze at the 1985 and 1987 World Indoor Championships, winning the World Indoor Mobil Grand Prix in 1989. Ann finished 7th at the World Athletics Championships in Rome in 1987 (the first time the women’s racewalk was included). She placed 10th at her first World Cup of Racewalking in 1983, improving to 7th in 1985, and 8th in 1987. In 1985 Ann led the Canadians to a team bronze, the first racewalk team medal ever for Canada. She was a silver medalist at the 1987 Pan Am Games, winning gold at the 1984 and 1988 Pan Am Cup of Racewalking. Ann also won bronze at the 1987 FISU Championships, finishing 5th in 1985. On the Canadian scene, Ann won seven 5000m walk national championships (1980,81,82,83,84,86 and 87) and four 10km walk championships (83,84,86,88). Ann held the national records at all distances, indoor and outdoor, through the 1980’s, holding the Canadian Indoor 3000m walk record that she set in 1989 until 2022. Ann was instrumental in lobbying to have the women’s event included at the 1990 Commonwealth Games (where she did not finish due to a mid-race hamstring injury), and at the 1992 Olympic Games. Ann was the Athlete Director on the Board of the then-CTFA from 1986-88 and the Vice-Chair of Athletics Canada from 2014-2018. In honour of her accomplishments, Ann was installed in the World Athletics Heritage Museum in 2022, and the Athletics Canada Hall of Fame in the Class of 2018. She is also a member of the City of Ottawa Sports Hall of Fame.
