June 23. Track Time has Arrived
The OTFA is pleased to announce that a new developmental program, free to all OTFA clubs, is now available. This program, called Track Time, is the result of a comprehensive review of existing developmental programs for kids, and includes the most promising practices of each of those programs.
Track Time includes a ten week program plan, station descriptions and suggested activities, tips on how to manage your program and volunteers, and ideas for warmups, cooldowns and associated games.
The Track Time manual is available as a download from this site, or as a bound manual which we can mail to you. Each manual we mail comes with complimentary wall chart and points tables.
Each of the first eight OTFA clubs to apply will receive $750 worth of equipment as a start-up for the program. Clubs must cover the cost of delivery of the equipment. The program may also be adaptable to other equipment that clubs may already possess.
We believe Track Time will provide clubs with an off-the-shelf program which can easily be implemented to introduce young kids to our sport, drive membership, enhance local community visibility, and provide an opportunity for fund-raising.
Please let us know if you have any questions. To receive a bound Track Time manual or to apply for free Track Time equipment, send us an email at: ontrack@eol.ca
The OTFA wishes to acknowledge and thank program coordinator Kevin Dunbar for his work in developing this program and drafting the manual.

June 13. Changes to Supermeet 1 Schedule
In response to concerns expressed recently by members, several major changes have been made to the schedule of Supermeet 1 (Ontario Jr/Sr Championships, Ottawa, June 20-22).
To help ease the burden on Juniors writing final high school exams (and in some cases to allow them to compete at all), the Junior events scheduled for Friday, June 20 have been cancelled or re-scheduled to the following day:
- The JW and JM 400m semi finals will be run as the first track event on Saturday.
- The JW and JM 100m heats have been cancelled. If there are more than 24 entrants in either there will be two timed finals scheduled.
- The JW 3000m and JM 5000m will be run at the end of the Saturday track programme.
There have also been some changes made to the throws event schedule, the major one being the move of the Shot Put events to Sunday. The changes will permit athletes
to enter all of the throwing events.
We apologize for any inconvenience caused by these changes but for the sake of fairness, particularly with respect to The Quest for Gold Programme, we think the changes are necessary.

May 30. Mixed Competition Clarification
Athletes, coaches and meet directors should be aware that regardless of the IAAF rule permitting mixed competition in races of 5000m or longer and all field events in domestic meets, Athletics Canada will not, according to its rules, accept such performances for the purposes of records or selection. A motion from Ontario presented at the recent AC AGM to amend Rule 177 to allow Canadian records to be set in mixed competitions was defeated. Instead, a motion was passed that Canada ask, at the next opportunity, for a rule change in the IAAF Rules which would permit a World Record to be set in a mixed event. Presumably, following acceptance, AC would amend its rules.
Following is Athletics Canada Rule 177, which is currently in force:
“In all competitions held completely in a stadium, performances established in events which permit or schedule male and female athletes to compete together or to be on the track at the same time, shall not be eligible for Canadian records or selection purposes.”

May 27. NACAC U23 Championships
Athletics Canada published Selection Criteria in February for the NACAC U23 Championships. NACAC has only just recently sent out standards. These are not consistent with past events. Athletics Canada has been working to change many of these standards to make them fair and in keeping with the objectives of this meet. Many other countries have also expressed concern.
There are twelve Athletics Canada standards that are affected by the NACAC standards. Please see the attached document with NACAC standards highlighted in brackets. We will continue to work to have changes made, but we are bound by NACAC standards as stated in the National Team Selection Rules Book. Athletes should be prepared if these changes need to be made.
Athletics Canada will send out another bulletin when this is resolved.

April 1. New ‘Handicap’ Rating Program for Runners
A new ‘handicap’ rating program called “Road Warrior” (an initiative of the OTFA) will allow runners of all abilities to compete in races at virtually the same ability level. The rating system is similar to that used in golf, so a better runner who has a ‘handicap’ rating of, say 10-15 out of 50, could run against a slower runner with a rating of 35 and at the end of the race their finishing times would be adjusted by the Road Warrior software to determine who was faster that day.
“The program is designed to encourage current runners to train a bit more, to enter more races and have fun with the competitive aspect of running ‘against’ others of all abilities“, according to Road Warrior manager Michael Brennan. “It’s not supposed to replace current road race results like overall winners or age group winners, it’s just going to add another category of winners. The ‘Road Warrior’ winners at races could well be people who never win awards at races so for the masses, this program will be fun to participate in.”

| July 26. Medal haul for Canadian track athletes in Rio
A successful day was held by many of Canada's track and field athletes at the Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, yesterday. Ontario athletes got into the action as Jessica Zelinka (London, ON) won the Gold medal in the women's pentathlon with a total score of 6136 points.
Nicole Forrester (Mississauga TFC), "received a lot of energy and positive reinforcement from the crowd" to earn a silver medal after clearing 1.95m in the High Jump. (The winner, Maria Rifka (MEX) jumped no higher but won on countbacks). Forrester also commented that "being on the track and seeing how happy Jim (Steacy) was (in winning the gold in the Hammer) and seeing Jess (Zelinka) stumble at the 400 and was not sure if she was going to finish but showed her bravery with her sprint to the finish" were other factors that helped inspire her. Forrester is off to Europe shortly with some new insights as seeing herself on the Jumbotron made her realize that she is "doing alot of things technically wrong" yet her jumps at 1.97m were "easy". After competing in Eurpoe, she will return to her club to train for a few weeks before heading out to Osaka for the World Championships.
Perdita Felicien (Over the Top HP) and Deloreen Ennis-London (JAM) each ran 12.65 seconds in the 100m Hurdles but the Jamaican athlete was declared the winner in a photo-finish as Felicien was awarded the Silver medal. Angela Whyte (AB) won the bronze medal in 12.72 secs. in the same race. To cap the day, Tyler Christopher (AB) won a silver medal in the men's 400m with a time of 45.05.

July 23. From Ontario to Osaka via Rio: Day 1
The track and field portion of the Pan American Games, held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil are scheduled to begin today. Check here each day to get results and insights from our Ontario athletes competing at the Pan Am Games.
The IAAF World Athletics Championships, to be held in Osaka, Japan are now only 33 days away here are some notes and comments from discussions with members of the Canadian Pan Am team today:
Dana Ellis-Buller (Kitchener Waterloo TFC - Pole Vault): Competing TODAY
A very confident Dana Ellis-Buller, although having missed much of the outdoor season thus far with a hamstring injury, is just hours from leaving to the stadium to compete in the pole vault today. When asked about her predictions, she commented "Gold or silver, for sure", a fairly strong statement but if all goes well, the B+ standard of 4.46m will be achieved at the same, and Dana will be on the list for Osaka. One of her main competitors, a Brazilian athlete who has cleared 4.66m, might bring extra attention from the fans towards Dana in the form of heckling, which is okay as she stays fairly focused and will do her best to ignore it. Dana will be heading back home to Kitchener on Tuesday to attend a friend's wedding.
Esther Akinsule (Ottawa Lions TFC - 400m and 4x400m relay): Competing - Tuesday, Wednesday & Saturday
Esther Akinsule is coming off victories in the 200m (23.56) and 400m (52.81) at the Canadian Championships in Windsor just over a week ago and one of her goals for Rio are to go sub 52 seconds in the 400m. The semi-final is to go on Tuesday, in which she plans on running the race like a final. The final is scheduled for Wednesday and Esther will have a day off on Thursday and hopes to enjoy some time at the beach before getting back to business on Saturday for the 4x400m relay which is to be run as a straight final. Running the IAAF World Championship standard (51.91) and running in the low 51s would set her up nicely for a place on the team to Osaka.
Nicole Forrester (Mississauga TC - High Jump): Competing -Wednesday
Nicole, having met the Selection Criteria for the 2007 World Championships and having set a personal best of 1.95m at a meeting in Arnstadt, Germany is definitely in Rio to win. The World Championships in Osaka are no doubt the focus this year, but she is "feeling good" and a victory at the Pan Ams would serve as a "huge confidence booster and a good builder in to Worlds". Nicole, a doctorate student, somewhat reluctantly comments that she has neglected studying for her comprehensive exams to be taken mid-August before Worlds. Apart from her training and preparation for her event, Nicole has enjoyed some of her time people-watching but will be off to countries such as Belgium and Greece for more competition at the conclusion of Pan Ams.
Good luck to all.

Davenport Track at Varsity Centre on Sunday July 8. This meet was also the 4th and final stop of the Eastern Canadian High Performance Athletic Series and a great tune-up for those athletes competing at the Canadian Track & Field Championships taking place July 13-15 in Windsor, ON.
A 25 minute rain delay did not dampen the spirits of the athletes and spectators alike (in particular, U of T Head Coach, Carl Georgevski who was absolutely elated) in what will hopefully be the first of many more high performance track and field competitions on this bright blue German-imported surface at the John L. Davenport Track. Hundreds of passers-by along Bloor Street West also got a great view of the action as the athletes were mere metres from the street. With only wrought-iron fencing separating most of the north and west ends of the track from the street, many got a chance to watch the events without having to enter the stadium. Once inside, though, one realizes that the $5 entry fee was a bargain as the views were excellent no matter where you chose to sit or stand.

June 25. Corrections to: recently-issued Eastern Canadian Espoir Team Championships Memo
1. The athlete team fee ($100) quoted in the original memo was partly based on the assumption that the OTFA would be receiving a special government grant to help offset expenses for the project. As of today a grant has not yet been secured and as a result, the team fee must be raised to $225.00 per athlete. The grant, if approved, may apply especially to athletes who will be eligible for the 2009 Canada Summer Games, that is, 20 years of age and under as of December 31, 2007. There may, therefore, be two categories of team fees. Should a grant be received it will be used to reduce fees from the $225.00 maximum. Please note that the cost of air tickets, accommodation and entry fees is over $800 per athlete.
2. Due to the length of vaulting poles and possible space limitations on the aircraft our team will be using it may not be possible to include pole vaulters in the squad. Hopefully, this will not be an issue.
Roman Olszewski
Director of Technical Services

The race also hosts the Timex Series final which is the culmination of the Timex provincial series, encompassing every province across the country. New in 2007 will be a Pasta Dinner on Friday night at the Marriott Ottawa.
All proceeds raised from this event benefit Athletics Canada’s Junior Development Fund, helping off-set the cost of athletes attending World Youth Championships, World Junior Championships and World Cross Country Championships. Awards will be presented to Canadian Champions, Age-Category winners, and Timex Series Final Champions. All participants will receive an event shirt, a Finisher’s Certificate and Medal.

February 22. Shared Head Coaching Program
Through a program with the Canadian Sports Centre – Ontario (CSCO), the Ontario Track and Field Association has an opportunity to hire a Head Track and Field Coach in partnership with an OTFA member club.
The CSCO will provide limited matching funding (maximum of $25,000), through the Quest for Gold Lottery, for the purpose of hiring an OTFA Head Coach. The program, if successful, will also provide a range of sport science support to OTFA teams.
This is for a new position only, and cannot be part of an existing coaching program. As well, while the designers of the program would like to see this as a long term campaign, funding depends on the Quest for Gold lottery and cannot be guaranteed for more than one year.
Clubs interested in this shared coach position and which have existing funds to support a coach, should contact the Ontario Track and Field Association with a formal proposal. The proposal should include:
- name of coach (or coaches) to be considered, along with résumé
- commitment of time to OTFA coaching duties
- provision of office (for contact purposes) and training facilities both indoor and outdoor
- payment arrangements and schedule
The supported coach must have a minimum of Level III Certification and will have to meet the goals and objectives of the OTFA.
Deadline for Proposals: February 28, 2007

Following tabulation of points at the conclusion of last weekend's Supermeet 2 the Ottawa Lions came out on top of the overall club standings with a lead of over 150 points over runner-up Saugeen.
