May 9.  Scott-Thomas named OUA Coach of the Year

University of Guelph and Speed River TFC Cross Country and Track and Field Head Coach, Dave Scott-Thomas garnered another prestigious award as he was presented the FOX 40 OUA Male Coach of the Year Award for 2007-2008 at the Annual OUA General Meeting Thursday night at the Deerhurst Resort in Huntsville, Ontario. This award is presented annually to the top male and female coach in the OUA for all sports. Lisa Patterson, Nordic Skiing head Coach at Lakehead won the female award. This is Scott Thomas’ second FOX 40 OUA Male Coach of the Year award, after his first in 2002-2003.

This season was an outstanding year for Scott-Thomas who saw his men’s and women’s Cross Country teams win both the OUA and CIS titles and become the first school ever to successfully defend both the men’s and women’s CIS titles.  He was named the OUA and CIS coach of the year and now has six Fred Foot Awards as the CIS men’s coach of the year. 

In Track and Field, Scott-Thomas led the Gryphon men’s and women’s team to their first-ever CIS Championship title.  The Championship was the sixth time in CIS history that one institution swept both banners in the season and Scott-Thomas was named the men’s and women’s CIS coach of the year.

March 28.  X-country: Canadian athletes announced for world university championships

Canadian Interuniversity Sport announced Thursday the 11 athletes who will represent Canada at the 16th world university cross country championships on Sunday, April 6, in Mauquenchy, France.
 
The five-runner women’s team is comprised of University of Guelph teammates Lindsay Carson of Kitchener, Ont., and Rachel Cliff of Vancouver, Western Ontario’s Leila Angrand of Sudbury, Ont., Queen’s Leslie Sexton of Richmond Hill, B.C., and Calgary’s Heather Sim of Calgary.
 
A trio of Windsor Lancers, Andrew Coates of North York, Ont., Ding Marial of Mali, Africa, and Dave Weston of Windsor, lead the six-member men’s squad. They are joined by Dalhousie’s Peter Corrigan of Ottawa, Queen’s Robert Kitz of Halifax and Manitoba’s Kristjan Hunter of Winnipeg.

March 17.  Ontario athlete performances in Washington, DC

Flying Angels Track Club athletes competed in the prestigious Nike Indoor Nationals just outside Washington, DC.   March 15-16. The athletes had solid performances. Brian Richards returned with a bronze medal in the boy’s long Jump and Shemon Tyson finished fourth in the Boy’s Triple Jump. Both athletes were named All-Americans following their performances.

Brian’s long jump performance on Sunday came as he met the team in Washington, DC following his bronze medal performance on Friday at the National Scholastics Indoor Championships in New York.

The Nationals is the nation’s premier high school indoor event that featured top performances from more than 2,000 athletes in front of more than 6,000 spectators.

March 17.  Highlights from 2008 NSIC

Maddie Buttinger (UTTC) led the way for Ontario athletes at the 2008 National Scholastic Indoor Championships at the Armory in New York, NY this past weekend (March 14-16, 2008). Maddie won the gold medal in the Women's Pentathlon with a score of 3793 points and was the silver medal finisher in the Women's High Jump after clearing 1.71m.

Other Silver medallists include Jaideene Lowe (I Be Fast) in the Women's Triple Jump (12.12m) and Richard West (Phoenix Athletics) in the Men's 800m (1:52.93). Bronze medals were won by Ian Warner (Phoenix Athletics) in the 60m, and Brian Richards (Flying Angels) in the Long Jump.

March 10.  Scott-Thomas wins CIS Coach of the Year as Gryphons Men & Women take Canadian titles

The Canadian Interuniversity Sports Track and Field Championships were held at McGill University on March 6-8, 2008. Dave Scott-Thomas, the Guelph Gryphons Head Coach for the Track & Field Team, won the Bob Boucher Award -CIS Coach of the Year - Men and the Sue Wise Award - CIS Coach of the Year - Women, as the Gryphons won both the Men's & Women's title at the Richard Tomlinson Fieldhouse on the campus of McGill University.

February 26.  Fairall wins OUA Coach of the Year as Lancers Men & Women dominate

Dennis Fairall, the Windsor Lancers Head Coach for the Track & Field Team, was awarded the Bob Vigars Award - OUA Coach of the Year - Men and the Sue Wise Award - OUA Coach of the Year - Women, as the Lancers won both the Men's & Women's title on their home track.

Leading the way for the men's team was Andrew Coates, Hec Phillips Trophy - Most Valuable Male Performer at OUA Championships following his 3,000m Gold and 1,500m Silver medals. The Women were led by Noelle Montcalm, Dr. Wendy Jerome Trophy - Most Valuable Female Performer at OUA Championships as she  won Gold in the women's 60m, women's 300m and the Women's 4x200m relay and took the Bronze in the women's 60m Hurdles.

June 11.  OTFA members dominate OFSAA

OFSAA Track & Field Championships, held June 7-9, 2007 at the Terry Fox Stadium in Ottawa saw 25 Ontario records go down, including Andrew Heaney's (Cardinal Newman) 800m record breaking run. Heaney who also competes for Phoenix Athletics of the OTFA, finished in 1:48.26 to set the Canadian Interscholastic record set 15 years ago by Kevin Sullivan.

Of the 99 medallists in the individual able-bodied events in the Senior category, at least 82 (or nealry 83%) of them are registered or train with an OTFA club. 15 of the 16 senior women to win gold medals are registered with the OTFA, while 12 of the 16 senior men to win gold medals are registered with the OTFA. In the Junior category, 55 of the 90 medallists in individual able-bodied events also belong to the OTFA.

June 7.  31 Canadians set to compete at NCAA Track and Field Championships

31 Canadian athletes are competing in Sacramento, California at the 2007 NCAA Track and Field Championships. The competition began yesterday, and will conclude on Saturday June 9.

The meet got underway yesterday with a number of Ontarians already in action:
 
·           Andrew Ellerton qualified to advance in the men’s 800-metres with a time of 1:48.76 in heat 2,
·           Kyle Smith will join him in the next round with a time of 1:50.01
·           Richard Adu-Bobie (10.29) and Justyn Warner (10.35) were eliminated in the 100-metre semis.
·           Alex Becker will advance in the women’s 5000-metres (16:07.54)

May 1.  Zelinka named CIS's Top Female Athlete

Athletics Canada is proud to announce that Jessica Zelinka from London, Ont. was named Canadian Interuniversity Sport’s (CIS) top female athlete for the 2006-2007 season at the 15th annual BLG Awards last night.

Zelinka who trains in Calgary, AB, had a season to remember on the CIS circuit capped off with five gold medals and one silver at the CIS Championships.  Her gold medal haul is a new CIS record.  She also set a CIS record in the pentathlon and was named CIS female athlete of the year (field events), was a first-team all-Canadian, named CIS Championships MVP and was the Canada West MVP.

March 12.  CIS Indoor Track & Field Championship Results from McGill

Jessica Zelinka (University of Calgary) from London, Ontario and Megan Brown (University of Toronto) led the way with 4 and 3 gold medals, respectively, at the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) Track & Field Championships, held at McGill University in Montreal March 8-10, 2007. Zelinka set 3 New CIS Championship Meet Records in winning the womens's Pentathlon with 4380 points, the 60mH in 8.28 seconds and the Shot Put with a distance of 14.74m. She also won the Long Jump in 5.89m.

Megan Brown won the 1500m and 3000m and was the leadoff runner for U of T's 4x800m gold medal team.

March 12.  Heaney wins boys 800m at NSIC in New York

Andrew Heaney (Phoenix Athletics) pulled the biggest upset of the day at the USA National Scholastic Indoor Championships in New York City. Heaney won the boys 800m from the unseeded heat with a blazing 1:50.62 to set an Armory record. His time would place him 2nd in US National High School Rankings this year. Maddie Buttinger (Laurel Creek) also had great performances in winning the High Jump in 1.74m and placing 3rd in the Pentathlon with 3403 points.

March 9.  Zelinka named top female CIS Track & Field Athlete

Jessica Zelinka (London, ON) has been named the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) female track & field athlete of the year and was also recognized as the top field athlete of the year. Zelinka who attends the University of Calgary, holds the Canadian record in the heptathlon and recently won gold medals in the pentathlon, long jump and shot put at the Canada West Championships.The male honour went to Jim Steacy (AB) who won a silver medal in the Hammer Throw at the 2006 Commonwealth Games.

Megan Brown (University of Toronto) was named outstanding female track event performer, while Suzanne Fish, a pole vaulter at the University of Toronto, received the female student-athlete community service award.
