2010/01/11 A Call for Applications - Women in Coaching
January 11, 2010

THE Coaching Association of Canada’s WOMEN IN COACHING NATIONAL TEAM APPRENTICE PROGRAM

The Women in Coaching program supported by the Coaching Association of Canada (CAC) is a very strong and vibrant group lead by Sheilagh Croxon, who has been successful both nationally and internationally as an athlete, coach and sport leader.

This coaching program directed by the CAC is solely supported by a team of professional women with the goal of increasing the number of coaching opportunities and bettering the coaching environments for women at all levels of sport. Since 1987 over 500 women coaches have received more than $3,000,000 in the form of professional development grants, apprenticeship grants and National Coaching Institute scholarships.

The National Team Apprenticeship Program (NTAP) is one of the programs that has been developed and supported by the CAC Women in Coaching program.  The following is a list of NTAP objectives:

  • To provide high performance professional development opportunities for women coaches
  • To increase the number of women in coaching at all major multi-sport games
  • To increase the number of women prepared to coach at the national team level
  • To include the development of resources to increase the awareness of women coaches at the international and professional levels to provide role models for aspiring coaches (Canadian Journal for women in Coaching.

Since 2001 the NTAP program has provided grants, leadership and support to three coaches in Athletics including Marnie Temple (2001-2003), Georgette Reed (2003-2005) and Carla Nicholls (2007-2010).  Support of the NTAP program is a key element of Athletic Canada’s strategic plan with regard to coaching development and the support of Women in Coaching.

In March 2010 there will be a call to all National Sport Organization’s to put forth applications for the new group of women coaches for the NTAP 2010-2012 program.  Athletics Canada is now accepting applications from our Canadian women coaches interested for the up and coming NTAP program.

A selection committee consisting of Athletics Canada’s Olympic Head Coach, Paralympic Head Coach, Manager of Coaching Development and the Leader of Women in Coaching will select two nominees from the applications to put forth to the CAC.  There is one coach position available per NSO for a total of 6 positions for this NTAP program.
